To answer your questions, I highly recommend to anyone my favorite two sources, one Yank, the other Reb: Hardtack And Coffee (Federal) by Josh Billings with wonderful illustrations by Charles Reed of Bigelow's 9th Mass. Battery and Detailed Minutiae Of Soldier Life In The Army Of Northern Virginia by Carleton McCarthy and illustrations by William L. Shephard, both members of the Richmond Howitzers during the war. Billings is longer and more encyclopedic but both are literally stuffed with useful information concerning the lives of the common soldiers.
