I know we have other CWT members besides @alan polk ans @7th Mississippi Infantry who live in or near Vicksburg. Hope they speak up and maybe a few might wanna do a short member-guided tour somewhere. We sure enjoyed our member-guided tours at Ringgold Gap and Chickamauga last October.

While we are looking for a hotel/casino deal I got a question to ask. How many of those planning to attend CWT Besieges Vicksburg 2019 will be first-time visitors to Vicksburg?

I've been there. Ready to cover what I didn't get to see (and what we didn't have explained) last time!

While we are working on lodging,I wanna throw a few itinerary thoughts out there.

As with our Chickamauga gathering last year,I am guessing that this year some folks won't be able to get to Vicksburg until sometime during the day Friday or Friday evening. I am inclined at the moment to schedule a Friday morning group tour for the early arrivers and leave Friday afternoon open for everyone to do there own thing. It worked out well last October. After our Friday morning Ringgold Gap tour,we disbursed and a group of us went to Resaca and others did other things. Friday afternoon would be a great time to make a run to Port Gibson, for those so inclined,to see Grand Gulf Military Park, Wintergreen Cemetery, the Windsor Ruins and even the Shaifer House for those feeling really adventurous. It will be kinda hard to work Port Gibson into a group tour imo.

My other thought is to focus on Raymond, Vicksburg NMP and maybe a couple of other places in Vicksburg on Saturday and Sunday morning. Champion Hill was a major battle in the Vicksburg campaign but most of the battlefield is on private property. There are some Champion Hill sites and markers that are not on private property, but they are kinda spread out as I recall and I recall a couple of them having a limited parking area. I can foresee the same logistical issues with a group tour of Champion Hill as with Port Gibson.

Somebody else suggested calling Vicksburg NMP to see what they might be able to do for us as a group. That is an idea and I haven't done that yet. Perhaps next week I will. The private tour of Champion Hill by Sid Champion is 4 hours long and normally is $100/person. Someone else suggested calling him and seeing if he could do a shorter version and maybe offer a per person discount as a group. That is an idea too but I couldn't even begin to give him a head count at this point. That is probably something members could do on their own on Friday afternoon,if so inclined.

Anyway...those are a few thoughts just to get the discussion started.

Most folks in the Deep South are happy to share their property with onlookers. It's not like New England.

I think if we ask, we'll get a green light to walk.

"Take only pictures, leave only footprints," works for most.

Wow, thanks. This is unusual. Mostly, folks will allow others to wander around, as long as it doesn't disrupt daily goings-on (farming).

Maybe this guy will take a group at a discount?
I spoke to that above. The other thing about Champion Hill is that those with mobility issues will find it to be tough going in a few places.

Bobby it all sounds good to me. Places on our to do list are Vicksburg, Raymond, Port Gibson, Grand Gulf MP etc. & anything else we can fit in, preferably as a group, so count us in. We're hoping to arrive on or before the Thursday and will be staying in the area until at least the Monday. Champion Hill not sure of at this time. Really looking forward to meeting everyone again.

Any other itinerary thoughts?

I can’t figure out how to “insert quotes” from Iphone but I was attempting to quote this from bdtex’s post above: “I am inclined at the moment to schedule a Friday morning group tour for the early arrivers and leave Friday afternoon open for everyone to do there own thing. It worked out well last October.”

If there are a few folks that want to see Champion Hill that afternoon, I can try and make it happen. Just need to know How many would want to?

We don't have a head count yet. Not even sure how long it will be before we can give an accurate count.

I understand. The offer stands in an effort to help with your suggestions for itinerary ideas.
Thank you sir. Ima work on a rough head count.
