I am a reenactor. My uniform is currently standard issue Union infantry (private). I have a distant relative that was in the 7th Massachusetts infantry and wounded in the second battle for Marye’s Heights, Fredericksburg. I would like to replace my standard issue coat buttons with buttons for the 7th Massachusetts. Should the buttons be the ‘hand and sabre’ design or the ‘coat of arms’? Where can I get reproductions? We’re these buttons for officers only? Original buttons seem to be about $20 each.
Thanks

No they were not for officers only. The Mass State Seal button for officers was what we call the staff button. as below. The one for soldiers was the one below that one. The high dome and the rim was the officers button. The enlisted button was a low convex style button. Sorry I don't where you can get repops as I only dig them. I'm sure our crackerjack re-enactment guys can help you.
