This isn't a Civil War quote, but it's pure Custer.

Custer in 1868 - "There are not Indians enough in the country to whip the Seventh Cavalry."

Reminiscing on the fact that 24 members of his West Point class resigned in order to join the Confederacy prior to graduation in June 1861:

"The resignation and departure of the Southern cadets took away from the Academy a few individuals who, had they remained, would probably have contested with me the debatable honor of bringing up the rear of the class."

- Custer, who graduated 34th and last in the class.
