Helped raise the 19th TX and was elected their Colonel. He fought at Millikens Bend, Mansfield and Pleasant Hill. The CSA Senate approved his generalship at their last meeting in 1865 before they fled Richmond. He is buried in Jefferson, Texas.

He made general at a young age of like 33... I want to point out Millikens Bend was a battle between veteran confederate troops against new untrained and newly trained color troops. they were poorly equipped with inferior weapons and many or most did not have informs or shoes. It was a battle where the fighting was hand to hand at times and the color troops carried the day with help from gunboats. The battle made Grant a believer that color troops could fight...
