He had quite an unlucky last name for a Confederate Colonel. However, it seems he was anything but a Coward, given his regiment lead a breakthrough on Union entrenchments after the death of Micah Jenkins to friendly fire.
Speaking of which: Coward, a personal friend of Jenkins, stayed with his friend as he was dying, telling the senior Colonel Bratton to take command of the brigade while he stayed behind to see if Jenkins would stay in the mortal realm. I believe he was still with him when Jenkins drew his last breath, not saying a word.

I assumed that that was how it was said but I've learned not to assume that everybody pronounces things like I (a northern New Yorker) would. I tend to compare my family's native accent to a mix of Canadian and Wisconsin dialect.

I can understand that. When you think first of 'leeward' noting the syllable emphasis, you can assume 'co-ward' maybe. But natural use of 'coward' is so prevalent in it's known pronunciation, I would think the 'co-' would be prefixed to '-word' making 'co-word' if it were to be pronounced thusly.
Lubliner.

Ask my wife how I pronounce "Lancaster". It drives her crazy (she's from south central Pennsylvania).
