Nim Wilkes

Slave/Teamster

N.B. Forrest's Command

Nim Wilkes ........."I was in every battle General Forrest fought after leaving Columbia, (Tennessee), generally driving an ordnance wagon. Got hurt at Como, Mississippi, after the battle of Fort Pillow. Mule fell on me and hurt my right ankle. I was laid up in the hospital at Corinth, Mississippi, I think the doctor was named Cowan. Mustered out at Gainsville, Alabama, took the oath".

Chief Surgeon on General Forrest's Staff, was Dr. James B. Cowan. It was the good Doctor who witnessed Forrest calling Braxton Bragg a coward.

This man was wounded three times, in the left leg at Winchester,Va., the right thigh at Gettysburg, and the right shoulder at New Burn, NC. There's only 2 cards in his service file, dated June-September, 1861. His initial enlistment was for one year. One could easily come to the conclusion after one year, he was dropped from the rolls and went home. That was obviously not the case.
