Appears on Company Muster Roll for July/Aug 1863 as not stated and for Sep/Oct and Nov/Dec 1863 as present. Appears on CMR for Jan/Feb 1864 as present, in arrest and for Nov/Dec 1864 and Jan/Feb 1865 as present. Captured April 5, 1865 at Five Forks; imprisoned at Point Lookout , Maryland; and released June 26, 1865 on Oath of Allegiance.

Transferred from Company D, 20th South Carolina into Company I, 22nd South Carolina Infantry on November 10, 1863 at Charleston SC for 3 years or the war. Appears on CMR for Nov/Dec 1863 as present with remark "transferred from Co D 20th Regt SC on this 10 Nov 1863." Captured June 2nd 1864 near Bermuda Hundred; transferred to Fort Monroe June 3, 1864; and imprisoned at Point Lookout Maryland until exchanged October 30, 1864.

Enlisted May 18, 1862 at Fort St. Phillips as a substitute for R M Lewis. Described as a 40 year old farmer, born in Robeson NC. Recorded as present from May 1862 until "transferred to Engineer Corps by order of Maj Genl Whiting Aug 3/63." Enumerated on the 1900 US census for Asheboro, North Carolina as Alford Chavis, age 70, enumerated as black but the majority of members of the Chavis families of North and South Carolina were mulatto.

North Carolina Pension Application for Porter Scales.
A black man who was drafted and sent to Fort Fisher and Wilmington to serve as a laborer; includes an affidavit from veterans J. T. Wall of the 5th NC Cavalry and T. C. Peay of the 45th NC Infantry.
