Appears on a Roll of Prisoners of War paroled at Vicksburg, Miss, according to the terms of capitulation entered into by the commanding Generals of the United States and Confederate forces July 4, 1863. Paroled at Vicksburg July 10, 1863. Enumerated on the 1870 US census for District 2, Monroe County, TN as Penalton Isbel (mistranscribed as "Penalton *ad" but clearly "Isbel") age 45, male, black. [Race from census.]

More Info on Pendelton. There were two. One Confederate, one Union. They were cousins. Both are in my family tree.

Appears on a Confederate Reference Card indicating he was a "Free Negro" who worked as a teamster at Newtown, Va in October, 1863. Appears on a Roll of Non-commissioned officers and privates employed on extra duty at Newtown, Virginia November 1-30, 1863. Appears on a Receipt Roll for pay indicating he worked as a teamster at Sparta, Va. from June 9, 1864 to October 1, 1864.

....and another man from the 22nd Battn GA Heavy Artillery. Possibly Robert Lee's brother? This man, Richard Lee, is recorded as a Cook, but listed on one CMR as "On picket at Fort Barton."
