Cost for New Orleans to bring down Confederate monuments? So far: 1 bidder, triple the budget

Only one bidder has submitted a proposal to take down three Confederate monuments in New Orleans, and that firm is asking more than three times the amount the city has budgeted for the project.

The scarce interest and the big price tag — perhaps not surprising in view of threats received by previous bidders — could ultimately delay taking the monuments down. The city may have to set aside more money for the job, which would require another vote of the City Council.

Cuzan Services Limited submitted a $600,000 bid to remove the statues of Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and P.G.T. Beauregard and Confederate President Jefferson Davis from public view in New Orleans. The bid was opened Tuesday afternoon.

Yep, I posted the story yesterday. It will likely get real ugly before it is over. The decision to push for removal of those statues was a very bad and costly one for a city on the brink racially and financially. 50 murders in the first 3 months of the year for a town of something like 380,000 people. They are a month ahead of last year's rate yet this is NOLA's priority.

So the rush to destroy the past will not be easy or cheap....

Don't forget, someone or a group of individuals was willing to pay $1.2 million to do nothing more than remove the word "Confederate" from a Vanderbilt residence hall, so people are willing to part with a lot of money that could be put to better uses than erasure of the past. This may do no more than delay the removal, but any time gained is helpful for preservation.

I wonder if $200K would even cover the cost of busting them up and hauling the debris away.
