I've not seen US cav with scabbards & CS leather shortages would make such unlikely IMO. The leather thimble & sling combo remained well after the war. As CS cav nominally used US toe & style of equip I think the carbine/rifle scabbard in CS service likely a bit of fiction.

It was a question as to if western style saddle scabbards were at all appropriate in lieu of sling & muzzle thimble for cavalry.
