Damian and I have become friends over the last six years as we pursue complimentary tracks in documenting the role of immigrants in the American Civil War. Congrats buddy!

Congrats to Damian.

May ye be in heaven for an hour 'fore the divil even knows you're dead.

Damian says that through his blogging, he made his first trips to the US, wrote and published two books, gave lectures in Ireland, England, Scotland and the US.

I was lucky enough to be with him for a little while on his first day on an American battlefield.

I still have to do the post of what you showed us on your tour of New York Pat, I am a slow mover when it comes to posts  Can't wait to get back to New York

I remember from the movie "Gangs of New York" I believe, of a scene where the Irish immigrants were recruited right off the ships on arrival. @Pat Young , as you are an authority on immigration, would this have been an accurate depiction? Thanks in advance.

Here are a couple of pieces I wrote on that topic that might be of interest:

Thanks for the info, I remember when I saw the film years ago, thinking that the producer/writers were taking literary license. It's sad to think it was depicting actual history. Feeding men into the meat grinder of the ACW.
