From the Florida Ordinance of Secession:
"That the State of Florida hereby withdraws herself from the Confederacy of States existing under the name of the United States of America."
1. Of the ordinances of secession, how many claimed the USA was a confederacy/confederation?
2. Did Southerners consistently claim, since the Constitution was ratified, that the USA was still a confederation? If not, was this an idea argued by Calhoun and other nullifiers in the 1830s? Or did it not really come up until the 1850s?
3. Did any notable Northerners argue that the USA was still a Confederation after the Constitution?
