In another thread, I asked other contributors about records of unit strengths in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the Overland Campaign (Link here: https://civilwartalk.com/threads/co...gn-army-corps-division-and-or-brigade.155605/). I wish to posit the same question in regards to the Army of Tennessee at the time of the Atlanta Campaign.
I have only vague suggestions on this issue. The best I could find were the John Tiller Civil War sim game Atlanta Campaign (yeah, video games, not good source). Otherwise, I have a quote from Craig Symond's bio on Pat Cleburne that his division started the campaign at 5218 effectives (Stonewall of the West pg. 219). Albert Castel is rather vague with his numbers, saying in Decision in the West that Cheatham's Divison numbered approximately 6000 men (pg. 50), Stewart's Division approximately 4000 (pg. 225), Colonel Nisbet's 66th Georgia Regiment was about 1000 men strong (pg. 106), etc. He does gives total effective infantry (of the 7 infantry division in North Georgia) at 41279 men (pg. 106), and the army's Artillery Corps at 3227 present for duty (pg. 108); and the total men in the field ("aggregate present") at 63807, 54500 "present for duty", and 43887 "effectives" (pg. 111). These numbers are nice on their own, but they are very vague and not well broken down.
So, I ask for any more detailed numbers if they are out their. I'd like to single out @AUG and @67th Tigers as they were quite helpful on the earlier thread.

Well, not exactly detailed, but I've found that the Australian researchers (Keating and Trout) who designed the old SSG Civil War Battles computer games were pretty dang accurate (within rounding to the nearest 100 men). Here is their breakdown on the Battle of Atlanta (Hood's Second Sortie). So of course, previous losses up to this point would need to be deducted. Again, the information is limited from a full OoB standpoint because primarily only McPherson's Army of the Tennessee was involved on the Union side:

This is helpful in a general sense, though JT's Atlanta Campaign has more detailed numbers

Also, a couple of bizarre things I noticed
1: The 63rd GA Regiment is absolutely huge for a late war confederate regiment, about 3 men shy of the strength of the 26th NC at Gettysburg. I guess it is understandable given it was on garrison duty in Savannah up til that point.

2: In the July 10th report, it says J. K. Jackson's Brigade was broken up, with most of its units going to other brigades, except for 5th and 47th GA Infantry Regiments, which are sent to Savannah. I cannot think of why this was done, as Johnston was constantly complaining about needing reinforcements, why 2 large regiments would be sent to the rear.

About this time, the Commander of Charleston and Savannah wrote to (IRC) Gen. Cooper with the statement that he had NO infantry in his command -- all of it and most of his field artillery had been sent to Lee and Johnston. These 2 regiments may have been in reply to his vulnerability.

Jackson's Brigade was intended to be exchanged for Mercer's large Brigade sent from Georgia to Johnston's Army to help repel Sherman. Johnston drug his feet on keeping his end of the deal, and then only sent 2 of the 3 regiments.

4/16/64 Richmond orders-
-1st Ga*-54th Ga-57th Ga under Gen Mercer will move to Dalton & report to Gen Johnston
-Thereby relieving 5th Ga-47th Ga-55th Ga [probably 65th] which will move under Gen Jackson to Savannah.
*as to 1st Ga Vols-revoked 4/28/64

4/22 Jones to Richmond AG Cooper-I have had the honor to receive extracts from S O #89, War Dept, ordering the 1st & 54th & 57th Regts Ga Vols to proceed to Dalton, Ga., to relieve the 5th, 47th, & 55th* 65th Ga Regts;

5/3 Charleston, S Jones to J E Johnston-vital that Jackson’s Bgde come here at once. Mercer’s Bgde left here on 4/29-I have sent all my Infy to Richmond

5/4 same too same- I require Jackson’s Bgde here ASAP

5/5 Jones to Gen Johnston-Charleston is not threatened, but I am sending off last Infy Bgde to Va under urgent orders from War Dept, & require Jackson's Bgde here soon as possible.

5/6 same to same-Please inform me when I may expect Jackson's Bgde. I am in great need of Infy in this Dept.

5/11 same to same- Has Jackson's Bgde been ordered to me? If not, when will it be? I want it very much.

5/13 same to same- I believe the enemy will attack this place very soon. I beg that you will send Jackson's Bgde to me without longer delay.

5/13 Jones to Cooper- Gen Johnston has not yet sent Jackson's Bgde to me, though I have repeatedly asked him to do so. I am in great need of them. I believe there will be an attack on this place very soon.

5/14 Charleston, S Jones to Gilmer at Savannah-have you heard anything of Gen Jackson & his 3 Ga Regts?

5/17 Bragg to Cooper- The action of Gen Johnston in not sending back the troops ordered after he had received those sent to relieve them should be explained. He has not even notified the Dept of his action. Orders just issued for troops to come here are rendered nugatory by this unauthorized action.

7/5 Jones to Col Rains, Augusta- Order the QM at Augusta to prepare transportation for the troops coming from Gen Johnston's army so as not to lose a moment in hurrying them on here; they consist of two Regts.

7/5 Charleston, Jones’ AG to Jones on James Island-Gen Jackson with 2 Regts in Augusta with orders for Savannah. I countermanded those & so he can come directly here

7/6/64 Charleston-Sam Jones to Cooper-Johnston has ordered 2 Regts to me. I need more

7/6 Jones’ AG to Taliaferro-the 5th & 47th Ga [agg 525] on the way to James Island-they have no rations

7/7 Charleston-Sam Jones to Cooper-Johnston only sent me 521 men. Can I get any reinforcements?

7/8 Jones to Gen Johnston-The two Regts you send only number 520. Can you not at least send the other Regts of Jackson's Bgde? The attack on this place is formidable & persistent; fire today very heavy, disabling several of my best guns; I greatly need reinforcements.

Reading Daniel Sutherland's article on Daniel Govan, No Better Officer in the Confederacy (I'll give a link to my copy below). According to him, Govan's Brigade (presumably including the regiments from Polk's brigade after it was dissolved) numbered 1221 men on July 22nd, lost 86 killed, 322 wounded, and 91 captured at Bald Hill/Atlanta, thus leaving 722 unwounded men (Page 27 on the file).
I am not certain which of the two sources Sutherland cited for the paragraph that he gleans these numbers from. Either the Purdue's Cleburne biography (which I do not have and it looks super rare), or the citation from the O.R.
Edit: I checked the volume of the O.R. he cited, both are about the battle of Jonesborough he quotes later in the paragraph. Assume its in Purdue and Purdue. I'd love a copy for Christmas.

I get the feeling there is an article like this on the Orphan brigade or some brigade or division level unit which had good break downs in numbers. I hear a lot about how the Orphan brigade started with 1200 men and ended with 400 men in this campaign, but I have no clue where this number comes from.

I just realized I seemed to have misposted the final page, detailing the remaining table for August 31st.
I shall rectify this

Also, Abstracts for the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Tennessee (Richard Taylor's Command), which could have theoretically provided reinforcements to the campaign (Particularly Forrest's Corps), from that same date. Also OoBs to give a better glimpse at how the department was organized.

Hi is there any resources like this for the union?
I believe there are similar tables for the union, but usually those just go down to corps level. Also, their system of counting troops is very convoluted (there's another thread on the Wilderness Campaign where a user breaks down the problems with Union strength returns and how they are organized).
Basically, for the Confederates, you just need to look at the "Effective Total Present" section to see what they would have been able to field in combat. For the union, the issue is somewhat trickier.

thank you for the response in your opinion how accurate are the numbers in the john tiller software games from what I've seen on youtube their numbers for Antietam are pretty similar to the documentation I have for Antietam but I'm on the fence about picking up their games.

They're generally accurate. Sometimes they're clearly estimating with some units for certain campaigns. Other times their numbers are slightly too high (I only have the mobile version, but for Franklin, Cleburne's division, minus J. A. Smith's brigade, is already too large to my knowledge, and especially the 5th Confederate, which I'm sure ended the Atlanta Campaign with only a small cadre as most were captured, numbers 215 men in that.)
Overall though, good games, though I can only recommend the most recent ones on computer as they are the cleanest and least buggy, and also because there's only so many of these that you can get before you run into space issues.

i wish they attached the unit sizes before each scenarios in a pdf but its manageable to click on each unit and record the numbers. thank you for all the help I believe one of your posts led me to Ezra Carmens manifesto for Antietam
