The Camp Moore Historical Association will hold its annual Civil War Living History Encampment and Re-enactment Saturday and Sunday.

Camp Moore was the largest Confederate training camp in Louisiana and the only one in the country still open to the public, a news release from Camp Moore said.

Camp Moore features six acres of grounds, a 2-acre cemetery and a museum with artifacts explaining the role of Camp Moore and the soldiers during the war, the release said.

The gates will open at 9 a.m. each day and the museum at 10 a.m. The soldier’s campsites will be open to the public all day. Drills and demonstrations by the soldiers and specialty impressions will take place throughout the day. Guests are encouraged to visit the campsites and ask questions of the re-enactors about life in the 1860s. A scripted battle will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday with full-scale artillery, cavalry and infantry impressions. The Camp Moore museum will close at 4 p.m. each day and the grounds will close to the public at 4:30 p.m.

There will be Civil War period sutlers on site for people wanting to purchase items relating to the period of the war. During the war, sutlers were merchants who followed the armies on both sides and sold goods to the soldiers that they would not otherwise have had available, the release said.

The museum is full of items related to Camp Moore and the life of the soldiers from Louisiana. Included in the displays are original images of soldiers, soldier’s effects, a medicine chest full of original medicines, surgeon’s kits, musical instruments, letters from soldiers and displays of the various weapons and the ammunition used.

Food vendors will sell hamburgers, barbecue sandwiches, french fries, nachos, hot dogs and soft drinks. Souvenirs and books also will be available. A raffle drawing will take place following Sunday’s battle.

Admission fees are $5 for adults, $3 for students, and under 6 years enter free. The admission charge includes a tour of the museum.

For information, call Camp Moore from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday at (985) 229-2438 or visit www.campmoorela.com.

Camp Moore is located on U.S. 51, between Kentwood and Tangipahoa.
