If you are interested in Confederate paper money, I recommend "Confederate States Paper Money" edited by George S. Cuhaj. I have the 12th edition, 2012. It has history and value of the money. It has great illustrations of all the bills. It is a great reference book and for collectors of old Confederate paper money.

I would say if you don't know what you are doing, it could be. This book states there are some good fakes out there.

Since the Confederacy printed so much money, different papers were used and different plates were required to print the notes. The result was many different varities and plate numbers.

Grading of actual notes is very important. You need to know bank note grading. If you do not, you need to go to a coin shop that deals in paper money or numismatic convention to familiarize yourself with what each grade looks like.

The major grades are:

Uncirculated
Extra fine
Very fine
Fine
Vert good
Good
Less than good
Cancellations.

These grades are defined in this book.
