Inspired way back by the Gettysburg Confederate/Union OoB threads from last year, I want to do something similar for the Atlanta Campaign. However, due to Campaign taking place over the course of 5 months rather than the 3 days at Gettysburg, there is going to be a lot of changes over the course of the campaign.
For sources, I'm primarily consulting the O.R.s, Volume 38, Part 3, pages 638-683, for both the OoBs and the divisional strengths, where they can be found. Other details I've gleaned from various other readings, and, at the least, Wikipedia.

Due to the length of time involved, placing down unit strengths in the OoBs a la the Gettysburg OoB is not as simple.
I am thus going to give a chart summarizing the AoT's returns for April 30th, June 10th, June 30th, and July 10th, accessed from the aforementioned O.R. section.
For more information, I made a thread a while back looking for the strength returns.

Note: I plan to split the Atlanta Campaign into 3, rather than the normal 2, phases. The first phase being Johnston's tenure up to July 17th, when Hood takes command. Normally, the 2nd phase would be considered Hood's entire command from then on to when he abandons Atlanta September 2nd. However, I decided I'd make an intermediary phase during the great trilogy of battles Hood fought around Atlanta in his first two weeks of command from July 17th to about July 28th. One of the reasons for this being visualizing the breakup of Walker's Division following Bald Hill (Aka Atlanta July 22nd); the intermediary stage will show the division prior to it's breakup, while the final phase will show how the brigades were reassigned.
As to when that will be posted, that depends on how much free time I have available in these coming days, given I am in college currently. I may start today, or I may wait until I'm free of immediate obligations.

  • 35th TN: Col. Benjamin J. Hill (Detached as Provost Guard; consolidated with 48th TN mid-June and assigned to J. A. Smith's Brigade)
  • 48th TN IR: Capt. Henry G. Evans (Consolidated with 35th TN and transferred to J. A. Smith's Brigade)
Want to note, as far as I can tell, the 35th and 48th Tennessee did not reconsolidated mid-June. The 48th was disbanded July 14th and joined Voorhies' 48th Tennessee in Quarles' Brigade. 35th Tennessee remained in the Provost Guard until after July.

Col. Jonathan J. Lamb; Maj. Henry Hampton
Maj. Henry Hampton was serving as a staff officer for Hardee's Corps during the campaign, and would become the AAG of the Corps. Colonel Lamb was mortally wounded May 28th. I assume command passed to Colonel Andrew Kellar, but it may have gone to a captain.

I've always hated the large gap in reporting between April 30 and June 10 when many units arrived as reinforcements. I've always wanted to compile the strengths of all the units that Johnston received to determine the maximum force he had at his disposal... are there any regimental strength calculations and/or brigade computations that could get my desired numbers? Also... the cavalry... any way to fill the vast troop strength discrepancies for these regiments/brigades?

I've only seen one source that tried to do such a thing ("Battles and Leaders of the Civil War", Volume 4, pg. 281), but the numbers seem way off. Like, Mercer's Brigade according to this source had 2800 men when it arrived. Then again, the numbers I have in this case are given second hand and I don't have a copy of the book to consult the sources it uses.

Would the numbers from Newton's Lost for the Cause help you out? Those are not all down to the regimental level but you might be able to approach the needed data...

Certainly, along with any other direct source materials anyone knows of outside the OR... I would love to see a discussion room devoted to all of these OoBs that have been posted, along with those that have been prepared by members here, and general OR charts/summations that have been screenshot and posted... would really help with researching and locating these that are posted all over these threads currently.

See the file attached for the numbers/units before the beginning of the 1864 campaign season (Yes, I photographed it on my bed, it's already late in Europe...). @Luke Freet @maverickdd69 just write me a private message if you need other units as well or if certain pages are not in good enough quality.

I would enjoy that as well.
Right now I am trying to figure out what Colonels, Lieutenant Colonels and Majors were present for duty in the Army of Tennessee in 1865.

Would it be ok if I sent a message if there information as well?

I do own the highly recommended e-version of Collins' "The Army of Tennessee: Organization, Strength, Casualties, 1862-1865" which has a few flaws but overall seems to be reliable. Just hit me up with the dates needed!

I will also hopeful be editing wikipedia's Bentonville order of battle for the CSA as I am certain the Col John G. O'Neil command Tyler's brigade not major William H. Wilkinson and Col Colbert had Loring's Division not Col Jackson.
