First, thank you for allowing me to join this forum. It is exciting to make discoveries and to have a place to share. I have traced my ancestor to the Confederate cause and discovered he fought at Gettysburg which is exciting in itself. My wife pushed me to look into her families side and I was really excited to find that her great-great grandfather, Thomas S. Wilson, was a Captain in the Confederate Marine Corps stationed at Drewry's Bluff during the war. Having an officer as an ancestor makes research so much easier since most of those records remain in one form or another. I was amazed to find just how active the marines were during the war. The book:"The Confederate States Marine Corps: The Rebel Leathernecks" Ralph W. Donnelly, is and excellent source of names, equipment, assignments and day to day life of the marines. Mr. Donnelly has passed, but his notes and other items of interest is located at East Carolina University. I've pasted the links below. It is very possible that someone searching for an ancestor thought to have served in the Confederate Navy may have been in the Corps. The records are seperate and can't be found in the usual manner. Thank you for allowing me to share and I hope it might help someone in their search.
