Although a bit older at the start of the Civil War Adley Hogan Gladden seemed to have impressed General Braxton Bragg who gave Gladden the command of the First Brigade, Second Division, Second Corps of the Army of Mississippi. Gladden appears t have been energetic despite his age and may well have turned in to a good Confederate general. His contribution to the Confederate cause was cut short when Gladden died as a result of a wound received at the Battle of Shiloh. Due to his performance during the Mexican American War Gladden was considered to be an experienced military leader and skilled in warfare. The death of General Albert Sidney Johnston over shadowed the death of General Gladden. General Gladden has been nearly lost to history, but based on the views of the Confederate generals who he served with him his death robbed the Confederacy of a promising general. The Confedercy in the Western Theater could ill afford to lose a promising general.
