The below is clipped from the Memphis Bulletin newspaper of July 15, 1863. Have any of you researched these stories for accuracy?

I've read these stories before. They are often repeated in local history.

"Col" Crawford was an attorney from Greene county...one of Andy's unionist snitches. He was a delegate to the Greeneville unionist conventions of 61.

"The secod organnizationn that Burnside established in East Tenn. was a "secret police", headed by Robert A. Crawford of Greene county. Burnside directed Crawford to report on enemy movements, send agents into Confed. lines to gather intelligence, and provide information on disloyal citizens. Crawford was also authorized to recruit assistants; make requisitions for supplies, arms, and weapons; arrest persons suspected of giving aid to the enemy; and seize their property for the use of his organization. ...he provided information on a number of East Tenn. secessionists and received at least $1000 for his work." - War at Every Door
