This is a photograph of the "Conecuh Guards" of Conecuh County Alabama taken around mid 1890's. The original "Conecuh Guards" was enlisted into Confederate Service in May of 1861 and became Company "E" 4th Alabama Infantry, participating at 1st Manassas all the way through to the surrender at Appomattox when what was left of the 'Guards' went back home to Sparta and Evergreen Alabama and start life anew.

What I find so interesting about this photo is that at least 8 of the men in the photo are sons are nephews of members of the Original 'Conecuh Guards' and after 25 or 30 years had no reservations about putting back on the uniform of the US Government.
They were-
Charles R. Taliaferro (1868-1938) & Will Ashley Taliaferro (1872-1949) . Sons of Dr. Charles Taliaferro (Co. "E" 4th Alabama)

Dr. E.L. Stallworth (1877) & Will Stalworth (1872)- Sons of William Lemuel Stallworth (Co. "E" 4th Ala)

Everett Sampey (1846-1918) - Son of Francis Sampey (Co. "E" 4th Ala.)

Gerald Salter (1876)- 1915)- Nephew of Mitchell Burford Salter (Co "E" 4th Ala.)

"Tater" Salter- Unkown Salter. Possible brother of Gerald

Duke Guice (1873-1972)- Son of Lt. John G. Guice (Co "E" 4th Ala.)

Little Berry Chapman (1874-1940)- Nephew of Mitchell B. Chapman (Co "E" 4th Ala.)

I think it speaks well of these Southern boy and our country in general that the wounds of that War would begin to be put away. These 'Conecuh Guards' would become Company "K" 1st Alabama National Guards as well as Co. "B" 2nd Alabama, and participate to some degree in the Spanish American war and go on to become part of the 167th Infantry Regiment, participating in WW 1 and WW2 as well as being deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. It all started though with the beginning of the 4th Alabama when they swore Allegiance to the Confederacy on May 7th 1861.

Great Post. The original CW 4th was part of the AVC, also for anybody who doesn't know it, they have the best smoked sausage in the world in Conecuh County.
