Ken Burns mentions in his Civil War documentary that Chamberlain had gone to the 50th Anniversary of Gettysburg. This is not true, he was too sick to attend. He was however a commissioner for the event and helped to plan it. Here he appears in some photos with other commissioners. Dr Shaw, the surgeon of the 20th Maine who had helped save Chamberlain's life at Petersburg accompanied his old commander. Shaw was not present for the battle of Gettysburg in spite of what the movie Gettysburg suggests, but he came along to the planning for the reunion for what will likely be obvious reasons.
