While patriots throughout the South idolized Lt. Gen. Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson, most of them did so based solely on what they had read or heard about the Confederate warrior. Not so the people of Staunton and Augusta County. They knew firsthand Jackson’s cunning and audacity, having directly benefited from them during the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1862.
