I thought these were pretty interesting.
They are photos of Gettysburg dead that have been put to color.
The first two are Gardner's "Harvest of death" photos and the third is the sharpshooters den picture.

Artist opinion first: who did the tinting did a really good job on it. The very slight sepia tint to them really adds to the overall effect.

My opinion now: seeing the photos colorized really brings them closer to home and makes the war feel like it happened much sooner than it did.

Mosin,

Excellent of you to share these with us!

Excellent coloring by Mark Maritato.

Of course, now we want to see all of them that way. I can only imagine what the Bloody Lane pictures would look like....we are a "colorized" society, I guess.

I'm confused by the Federal look of the men in the first two. I thought those were supposed to be images of Confederate dead.

The first two are of union dead. These are Alexander Gardner's "Harvest of Death" photos. Frassinito established the locations of Gardner's photos except these. Nobody knows for certain where these pictures were taken on the field. The two pics are at the same location, just different direction. Many theories on the location have been tossed about over the years and I'm not 100% convinced but I think Earl Coates is pretty darn close. He believes the men are from the 5th NJ who held a skirmish line South of the Spangler place.

Excellent! I think he's made his case.

Would you REALLY want to see Bloody Lane colorized? Not me, black and white is sad enough.

That's really cool. It always amazes me to see color from old times. Like when you see a period dress and it's all colorful. You get so conditioned to seeing black and white that it's odd to see they actually were not as drab as they look in the pics.

Examininfg the grass on the first two pics makes me want to say wow..How some blades are fgree and some are yellow on top of them is pretty cool.. He must have used layers and of green and yellow and randomly erased some of it.Sorry just thinking out loud, Ms. Hale any guess on his process?

It's interesting in that it's seeing somthing I've seen hundreds of times in a different manner, and maybe it brings more detail into play, but I have to go with the group, they're sad enough in b&w. That being said, thanks for posting the pics though.

D. Scott Hartwig published an article in the October 2011 edition of Civil War Times and says that the pictures were taken on McPherson's Ridge and they are Union dead. The first photograph is thought by him to be dead of the 80th New York and the second photo is thought to be dead of the 121st Pennsylvania.
