Colonel John Hill (1801-1873)

One of my gr-gr-grandparents has extensive guardianship papers online. His father died and the minor children became guardians of a man - at the family's request. I assume the man they chose is kin somehow but have not been able to prove a link. Sadly they all got in a big fight and sued and counter sued each other for years! Lots of handwriting to master to read all that.

As to why guardians, it seems that was the norm in Mississippi when a minor child lost a parent. You might get a better explanation online. There is a law journal published at Ole Miss that has articles on Miss. legal history. I found one there that clarified the role my Gr-gr-gr-grandfather played when serving on the Board of Police during Reconstruction. Interesting stuff.
