Colonel Amasa Cobb took command of the First Brigade, Second Division, Sixth Corps at Antietam when Winfield Scott Hancock took over for the mortally wounded Israel Richardson.

When Cobb was colonel of the 43rd his Lt. Colonel was Byron Paine, chief Justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
At Fredericksburg, Cobb's brigade commander was Brigadier General Calvin E. Pratt, who would become a justice of the New York Supreme Court after the war.
