Clifton was a bright chestnut stallion of Morgan Breed. He was foaled in New Hampshire. He had several owners in his lifetime. At first he was a walking racer in New England in 1850s. In 1857 he was sold to Dr. William Capehart of North Carolina. Dr. Capehart was a surgeon in the Army of Northern Virginia. Clifton was killed in action in March 1864. It happened in cavalry action near Cheraw, South Carolina. Dr. Capehart was serving with Wade Hampton's cavalry at the time.
