Although not my usual Throwback Thursday fare, these two favorite photos are from my last visit in 2017 to South Mountain near Antietam Battlefield, Maryland. Above, site of the well where bodies of Confederate soldiers were dumped following the Sept. 14, 1862 fight at Fox's Gap; below, the War Correspondents' Memorial Arch in Crampton's Gap on the estate of former correspondent George Alfred Townsend (whose penname was Gath) in what is now Gapland State Park.
