I'm finding extreme differences in the calculations on the number of civilian deaths caused by the war, any suggestions on reliable sources?

All you have are SWAGs. McPherson is most often quoted at 60,000 but he admits it is a guess and doesn't really explain his methodology in coming up with the number. There seems agreement that deaths caused by disease and hunger, not battle related.
