The National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Milwaukee is a landmark structure. According to the article:

“This is a building of seminal importance to the story of the nation. It is where the story of caring for veterans starts,” said Jim Draeger of the Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Office.

The Milwaukee Soldiers Home contains some of the oldest buildings in the VA system, and the majority of its recuperative village and designed landscape is still intact. Old Main is the only original Soldiers Home building in the country designed to combine multiple basic veteran care functions under one roof. The Milwaukee Soldiers Home is beloved by veterans who believe its recuperative powers should remain accessible to aging Vietnam vets and returning Iraq and Afghanistan vets suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury.

A
lso located at the hospital complex is the Wood National Cemetery which serves as the the resting place for many of those the hospital served.

Wood National Cemetery is the final resting place of five recipients of the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration, given for “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty.” Other notable military burials include members of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first Union African American unit recruited in the north, and U.S. Colored Troops from Wisconsin.

Massive compound!

Two objectives accomplished: helping those in need and preservation of historical architecture. Win-win.
