The Civil War Trust is seeking volunteers to help with the maintenance and restoration of numerous battlefields and historic sites in Virginia on April 7 as part of Park Day, its annual hands-on preservation event.

Activities are chiefly outdoor jobs that range from raking leaves and collecting trash to painting signs and gardening. Volunteers will receive T-shirts, and some sites will provide lunch or refreshments. A local historian may also be on hand to detail the park’s significance.

Starting times vary at each site. Locally, the sites where volunteers may sign up are:

  • Brandy Station Foundation (Graffiti House), Brandy Station, 8:30 a.m. Volunteers will assist with tidying the porch, clearing brush, landscaping, removing trash, and maintaining trails. Water and snacks will be provided, and tours of the house and battlefields will be available. Contact: Eugene Hankinson at eugenehankinson@aol.com.
  • Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, Locust Grove, 9 a.m. Help is needed raking leaves, painting, repairing fences, clearing brush, landscaping, and removing trash. Ellwood Manor and Chatham will be open for tours during the day. Coffee, water and snacks will be provided. Contact: Kevin Hunt at hockeyminga@aol.com.
  • Germanna Foundation, Locust Grove, 9 a.m. Assistance is needed with window washing, dusting, picking up weeds and debris, and painting. Volunteers can stay after and tour the visitor center or enjoy walking trails in the Siegen Forest. Beverages and snacks will be provided. Contact: Ashley Abruzzo at aabruzzo@germanna.org.
  • Trevilian Station Battlefield, Trevilians, 9 a.m. Volunteers will assist with building and repairing fences, clearing brush, landscaping, trash removal, cleaning and painting. History and updates on the Trevilian House, as well as a meal, will be provided. Contact: Katherine Stiles at 1earlyhouse@gmail.com.

The Civil War Trust is a national nonprofit land preservation organization devoted to the protection of America’s hallowed battlegrounds. A complete list of sites included in its Park Day event is available at civilwar.org/events/park-day.
