The organization announced today that it has been honored with a prestigious 2012 Top-Rated Award by GreatNonprofits, the leading provider of user reviews about nonprofit organizations.

“Since our earliest days, the Civil War Trust has been committed to exceeding the expectations of our members, and this recognition is a testament to our constant effort to be the best possible steward of their donation dollars,” said organization president James Lighthizer. Our proven history of producing tangible results — historic battlefield land permanently protected and open to the public — continues to inspire confidence and commitment in our supporters.”
According to GreatNonprofits.org, recipients of their Top-Rated Nonprofit awards are chosen based on the large number of positive reviews garnered by the organization in online media. These testimonials from volunteers, donors and clients provide an in-depth picture of individuals’ personal experiences with the nonprofit. The Trust currently ranks first on Charity Navigator’s list of “10 Highly Rated Charities with Favorable Reviews” — with 105 evaluations averaging a perfect 5.0 rating.
The following are among the numerous laudatory comments in these voluntary reviews:
“The Civil War Trust, in my humble opinion, is the best-managed, finest-staffed charity in this country. I have been a continual member since 1988 and am closely familiar with the ‘inner and outer workings’ of the Trust and fervently believe this organization is one of the few that actually lives up to its noble purpose.”
“Anyone wishing to design a charitable organization only needs to follow one example: Civil War Trust.”
“I have been very pleased with the efficiency of their operations which allows more money to go to conservation and education. I further have been impressed with the focused opportunities they provide to support specific battlefield preservation initiatives, i.e. it costs this much to save an acre. It makes the contribution feel quite real in its impact.”
This is hardly the only accolade the Trust has received for its sound fiscal management. The organization recently received a 2012 accreditation from the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance, demonstrating that it has met all 20 of that body’s charity standards. Earlier this year, the Trust announced it had received its third consecutive 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s leading charity evaluator, earning an overall rating of 64.31 on a 70-point scale. The group also received a 2012 Valued Partner Award from Guidestar Exchange and has been named one of the Independent Charities of America’s Best Charities each year since 2005.
In 2011, the Trust permanently protected 2,042 acres of hallowed ground at 26 battlefields in 12 states. The total value of this land was $18.3 million, but thanks to the Trust’s signature tactic of leveraging member gifts against a variety of competitive governmental matching grants, only $3.3 million in private donations were needed to complete these transactions. That means that members experienced the equivalent of a 500 percent return on investment when it came to land purchasing power. Meanwhile, in 2011, the Civil War Trust’s costs for administration and fundraising remained well below industry averages, at just 3.4 percent and 11 percent respectively.
