Since today is famously the seventy-fifth anniversary of D-Day, June 6, 1944, and the news is full of the celebrations and commemorations, I was reminded of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the event that was as momentous for the generation that fought the Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg. Today's Throwback Thursday features a 1961 postcard from the Civil War Centennial and my own photo from a much more recent visit over fifty years later in 2014. The Eternal Light and Peace Memorial was dedicated on the seventy-fifth anniversary of the battle by President Franklin D. Roosevelt before a multitude that included, like our current events, what was the last significant gathering of veterans of the war and the battle.
