Cherry Grove Estate, just a few miles south of the Augusta County line on Route 11, is known as the birthplace and home of James McDowell, who served as Governor of Virginia from 1843 to 1846. But a little girl named Jessie born in 1824 at that same estate would also grow up to become not only an influential writer and political activist, but the namesake of a small but effectual contingent of Civil War union spies called the Jessie Scouts.
