"There was a man shot down the road the other day. The ball entered his foot. (I)t was an acident some of the soldiers were firing salutes out of the cars and one ball hit him more or lessacidents happen every day in the army. - Union Sgt. Abram Draper, July 28, 1861.
Leveraging the power of social media, a local Civil War reenactor raised $1,300 in less than 48 hours this week to buy a collection of letters written by a soldier who served in the Civil War.
“Civil War letters are so rare," said Sean Protas, who has never stumbled across such an extensive collection before. “It looks like a collection that is well taken care of.”
He created a campaign on GoFundMe, the online crowdfunding platform, on Dec. 11 and got enough money to purchase the collection by Wednesday evening.
The collection consists of 30 letters related to Union Sgt. Abram Draper.
