John P. “Jack” Ackerly III, one of Virginia’s foremost Civil War preservationists, died Thursday at his Richmond home. He was 82.

An attorney who served as rector of the University of Virginia from 1998 to 2003, Ackerly loved Virginia history—especially its role in the Civil War—and devoted years to trying to save the state’s battlefields from development.

May he rest in peace. His hard work is over, but the battle goes on. Perhaps there is less dispute over the preservation of battlefields as compared to the preservation of monuments, and this will ensure his legacy. I hope so.
