Every year, Civil War Monitor invites several historians to pick their favorite books of the year.

This year A. Wilson Greene picked Fighting Means Killing: Civil War Soldiers and the Nature of Combat by Jonathan Steplyk. Greene writes "This is simply a brilliant book."

Harry Smeltzer, author of the BullRunnings Blog has this as his top pick the four-volume set of rosters for Tige Anderson's Brigade. His honorable mention is A. Wilson Greene's A Campaign of Giants: The Battle for Petersburg.

Thomas Barber of Civil War Book Review picked this book on how the Union and Confederacy used loyalty and disloyalty as tools of state and how African Americans altered their status through the same.
