Other than tradition was there any reason for the colors. For example why did artillery wear red and infantry dark blue?

Everyone wore dark blue. (in the prewar army)

The branch color for infantry was skyblue.

And yes, it was tradition... Started in 1851 I believe.
 
Your are right and I changed it to light blue or sky blue blue. For some time before the Civil War Infantry wore Saxony blue trim, then wore sky blue trim, going to white after the Civil War, and then back to sky blue.
