I'm not sure I like this - I voted, and for the Trudeau, but not necessarally because it was really the best - it was the ONLY ONE I'd actually read! I thought it was excellent, and especially liked the maps showing the relative positions of the forces at various stages in the campaign, but is it really "better" than the others? And what a strange mix: Shaara's is of course a novel. The Coddington is what, forty years old? And Hood's new book on Hood ( try figuring that one out! ) isn't even on bookstore shelves yet? I just don't know...

Is there and if so how much of difference is there between sears and trudeau's Gettysburg books? Obviously it cannot be THAT much, but I'm curious.

Another choice would be the Blue and Gray CE-Rom Edition of "The Last Night and Last Day of John Hunt Morgan's Raid-Eyewitness accounts of Morgan's Ohio Raid of 1863" Compiled by Jere H. Simms.

I would be guaranteed NEVER to read that one, if it's only available in that format!

JB, if you follow the Amazon link to Sears' book and scroll down to a review by David Nicholas, you'll find a pretty good answer to your question. It's worth the three minutes to read.

It's a little confusing, because the voting and nomination threads are separate. I nominated the Hood book simply because we don't always have newly discovered resources as important as the Hood papers these days. It's a big deal. Whether you agree or disagree with Sam Hood's book, the discovery and publication of those resources is a VERY big development.

Agree on the confusion - I didn't "vote" because I haven't read all the books - I like the nomination concept, though. This Forum is starting to cost me a lot of lunch money on books, but it's worth it!

Agreed, but my impression is that it's not even available yet, therefore nobody should've been able to see it, much less evaluate it! Wouldn't NEXT month have made more sense? And then, there's still the fiction-non-fiction business...

We're talking "nominations." It will be available in a few days to evaluate. And evaluate we shall, I have no doubt.

it is going to be a monthly thing, make sure you nominate it next time :D

I'm exhausted trying to keep up with 150 year-old events through books! Hoping I'll make it another two years before I can retire to the more peaceful "Bridge Forum." I've got three books going and need to swallow Sears' Gettysburg within two weeks, followed by that that fellow Wittenberg's "One Continuous Fight." Talk about a provocative title! I hope I'll make it....

It won't take long to read Whittenberg/Petruzzi. Like I said, it's as much fun as reading a good detective whodunit. I literally couldn't put it down during the recent re-reading, and I was absolutely exhausted at the end of school--and should have been asleep....but they kept me awake to the wee hours.

Not sure why not. The book! is a pdf, which can be downloaded to the puter and read at your leisure. As it was a special edition, not sure if this was ever available as a free standing book.No real difference from reading google books online, or other papers, documents, etc. I upload most of my dvds and cds to my system for easy access. the Army and Navy OR's, the Confederate Veteran, Photograph history of the War, SHSP's, etc. Did have the Confederate Military History on previous puters, but not uploaded to this one.
