Unfortunately I again find I've only read ONE of the candidates, so I'll go with Burke Davis' Gray Fox which I think I read in high school a half-century ago! Davis was a "career Virginian" who wrote pretty exclusively about his state: his other works include They Called Him Stonewall; Jeb Stuart, The Last Cavalier; To Appomattox, and George Washington and the American Revolution. For a time he was employed by Colonial Williamsburg as a staff writer.

Since I'm a newbie to the history of Civil War .. after reading all the reviews I now know which one I'll want to purchase. Does that count towards a vote?

I found all three to be excellent... to choose a best of the three is extremely difficult.

I haven't read any of these books so I can't base a vote on an informed opinion. Maybe I should just vote for whichever book has the coolest cover.

I won't vote on this. Sorry but it's not much of a choice. All of them are about R E Lee. I vote for None of the Above. Give me an option other than All R E Lee books. Actually I vote for The Common Soldier Of The Civil War, by Bell I Wiley.

it might be dated but as far as R.E.LEE goes is there anything else but Douglas Southall Freeman.
A tidbit O' trivia here....maybe it'll win you a beer in a bar, so...here goes...

Douglas MacArthur considered this book and another by Freeman ('Lee and his generals', I believe...I have yet to read both of these)..to be the greatest history tomes dealing with the Civil War.

He also regarded Freeman as the greatest historian on the US Civil War at the time of his (MacArthur's) publication of his own memoirs.

(Yes, that is my source for these comments)

That's Lee's Lieutenants ( as in subordinates rather than the rank ); Freeman said that after spending so many years working on Lee, now that he was "dead" ( in his book as well as for real! ), one way to continue writing about him was by concentrating on those subordinates. I have the three-volume Lee's Lieutenants and should probably be ashamed to have never read it! I tried once years ago, but got bogged down in the politicking of 1861 and never even made it as far as First Bull Run; I'd probably do better now that everything doesn't have to be all "blood and thunder".

Once Freeman finished with Lee, he turned to that "other" Virginian, George Washington, completing six of its eventual seven volumes before he died! Like the biography of Lee, his Washington ( which I HAVE read ), is considered the most complete study. There are other excellent biographies of both men, but likely there will never be as detailed or complete. If Freeman can be said to have a real fault, it's in identifying too closely with his subjects and tending to glorify them.
