MURFREESBORO — In honor of this month’s 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, the Between the Lines: Reading About the Civil War book group will discuss “Slavery in the Clover Bottoms: John McCline’s Narrative of his Life During Slavery and the Civil War,” edited by Jan Furman.
At 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31, and Thursday, Feb. 7, participants will discuss John McCline’s story of his childhood as a slave outside of Nashville, his decision to leave home with the 13th Michigan Infantry in 1862, and his experiences traveling with the Union army as a young teamster.
The book group meets at the Heritage Center, 225 W. College St. in Murfreesboro. Both sessions are free and open to the public.
“John McCline’s narrative is a wonderful account of the transition from slavery to freedom experienced by a Tennessee boy during the Civil War. He came through Murfreesboro in March of 1863, and his memoir includes moving accounts of the grim aftermath of the Battle of Stones River here,” says Antoinette van Zelm, historian for the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area. “In addition, McCline’s postwar residence in the Midwest and his later relocation to the Southwest provide a great example of the opportunities seized by some former slaves after the war.”

We should have a CW book Group.

I just started Longstreet's Aide - The Civil War Letters of Major Thomas Goree in case anybody wants to climb on board. Realizing that may not be a good candidate for others, chime in if interested and you have some suggestions. Maybe we could schedule a 2/1 start.
