I was having a chat with @ami and what would you guys think of starting a Civil War book club? The idea is that we will pick a book from a list of around 5-10 options, people can bring up their own ideas just in case my list doesn't include what everyone wants. Once we get started the plan is to read one chapter at a time and then comment on our opinions and ideas on the content. I am not sure how long we want to give people to read each chapter? I know some people's schedules are busier than others and people read at different paces. (Two days- week per chapter?) I would definitely like to be involved in this if it takes off, in either a leader or follower capacity. I would prefer a variety of newer books as options, which will decrease the chance that most people will have already read it, but I don't want the book to be too expensive so that some people have to go out and buy a 35 dollar volume.

    * my personal choice would be Grant by Ron Chernow since I know many people on the site (including myself) have already preordered it.

I'll give this a few days and we will see which book gets the most votes.

I will go with Grant but I haven't pre-ordered it. I do want to be careful that it isn't always a $35.00 book. I could a chapter a week, maybe two. I'm a fast reader but, alas, I have to work, since I didn't win the 700 million lottery.

There is an older book, "Our Man in Charlestown" by Christopher Dickey that I'm burning to discuss with someone. Anyway, just a thought.

I just bought a 34 dollar book yesterday. To Antietam Creek: The Maryland Campaign of September 1862. I would be willing to buy Gordon Rhea's new book since I have been getting some extra spending by selling some old unwanted things on ebay recently. I have to study for school since I am taking Calculus and Physics this semester, but I could set aside some time to do this.

It might be hard since you are already 1/3 of the way through the book. I do have that one though. Let me know if their are any books you would like me to add to the poll.

That's good to hear. I might have to pick it up on the off chance it wins in the poll. I was going to buy it anyway. Got to complete the collection.
Let me know if there are any other books that would be good to add to the list.

@ami If we did this book club what kind of format would it be? Would it be just a ordinary thread or would it be set up so that there would be like a separate mini thread in the main thread for each book club meeting? I just want to keep it organized and know that each discussion is for a specific day.

It would be at a designated time in the chatroom

The book club group would need to pick a time that was most likely to be attended.

The day after the chat I can post the transcript for any who missed it.

I would suggest starting a thread a few days before the chat, like jerseybart does for the video chats. Reminde S can be posted there, as well as the transcript

A question. Are we talking about video chats? I currently own this phone, a tablet and an elderly laptop none of which have video capability.
