"City-Class" or "City-Series" gunboat

This term, referring to the Eads-built gunboats St. Louis (later Baron De Kalb), Louisville, Mound City, Pittsburg, Carondelet, Cairo, and Cincinnati, appears to have been coined in the 1950s or 1960s by Ed Bearss. At the time, these boats were most often referred to as "Pook turtles" after their primary designer, Samuel M. Pook, or just simply "turtles."
