It does appear that many of the Chinese who served in the Civil War, served in the Navy.

I found this an interesting article about Chinese soldiers during the war.
Sergeant Robert Watson of Company K, 7th Florida Volunteers "The Key West Avengers" mentions some "chinese" in that outfit.

Truly this is a cosmopolitan company, it is composed of Yankees, Crackers, Conchs, Englishmen, Spaniards, Germans, Frenchmen, Italians, Poles, Irishmen, Swedes, Chinese, Portuguese, Brazilians, one rock scorpion Crusoe; but all are good southern men. There are also Scotchmen, Welshmen, and some half Indians, surely this is the greatest mixture of nations for a small company that I ever heard of."

Watson was born at Ragged Island in the Bahamas. The Bahamians were called "Conchs." The "Rock Scorpion" was Mr. Peter Crusoe, a native of Gibraltar, whose residents under the British flag were known as “rock scorpions.”

Captain Robert B. Smith of this company, a native of Lancaster County, PA, seconds Watson, writing in a letter from Tampa:

"The people as a general thing have quite dark skins, black hair & dark eyes, though there are many exceptions for the inhabitants seem to be a mixture of all nations, English, American, Dutch, Irish, quite a number of Spaniards, some Chinese, a few Malays, some from the Bahama & Bermuda Islands & one or two from the Society & Fugu islands. I have charge of a company of prisoners & the above places are their homes with the exception of the Society & Fugu. They are a motley crew I assure you…"

Company K, according to Watson was considered a gang of "hard cases" by their regiment. Most of these fellows were fisherman and sea carpenters, and transferred to the Confederate Navy between 1862 and 1864, with many participating in the boarding and capture of the blockader USS Waterwitch at Ossabaw sound off Savannah in June, '64.

J. Marshall,
Hernando, FL.

Not specifically Chinese, but Mr. Stephen Decatur Bunker of North Carolina served with the 37th Battalion of VA Cavalry. He was the son of Eng Bunker, one of the famous original "Siamese twins" who resided at Mount Airy, NC during the war period.
