Charles Luther Lawhon was a nationally known monumental designer, art worker, designer of the Victory arches in New Orleans, the Hynes Memorial Fountain in New Orleans and many others. For many years he was an associate with Albert Weiblen Marble and Granite Co. of New Orleans and later in his short life with the Tennessee Marble Works.

Two of his best works are at Vicksburg. The most prominent is the Memorial Arch which came about due to $35,000 in left over funds of the $150,000 that Congress had appropriated for the 1917 Blue Gray Reunion. It was finished and dedicated in 1920. The second is the Louisiana monument which was also dedicated in 1920.

The Weiblen Marble & Granite Co. had its own quarry and workshop at Stone Mountain Ga where the stones were mined and shaped for all its projects.

Not about your guy Lawhon, but the guy he worked with in Louisiana - Weiblen. I found this blog that has a detailed bio on Weiblen and tons of pictures of his work. Its amazing stuff. He is evidently the sculptor of the famous "weeping angel" inside the Chapman-Hyams tomb in Metairie Cemetery (Metairie, LA) http://www.oakandlaurel.com/blog/what-th-stone-age-boys-would-think-albert-weiblen-1857-1957
I have been to Lafayette Cemetery No.1 on a NOLA Garden District tour, so it's interesting to read some of the history of those structures here. Another nice share.
