Wounded at Shiloh. There were Six Confederate generals killed during the suicide attack at Franklin, Carter has the distinction of being one of those six.

The 38th Tennessee and the 22nd Tennessee were consolidated and this is the regiment that Carter commanded at Chickamauga. This unit was not with Bragg's main force at Chattanooga as it was detached to Charleston , Tennessee.
