Carbine, there were fifty different types made during the civil war. I never knew this...and how can some carbines be muzzle loaders and still be considered a carbine...??

General Burnside created a type of carbine before the war called Burnside carbine...who would have thought??

Here a link to the carbine site.....

I ask why did the Sharp and Spencer carbines catch on during the civil war over the other carbines?

I am amazed Burnside did not use his position to promote his carbine during the war..

Wow, fifty carbines who knew...even the Confederacy made its own carbines..

The definition of a Carbine is a smaller and lighter version of a long arm, or a small and light arm often used by mounted personnel. Carbines as such date back to the earliest days of mounted use of firearms British, & American Dragoons carried Carbines in the Rev War, American Cavalry had em in the Mex War.... French Imperial and Coalition Dragoons carried em in the Napoleonic Wars.. breech loading does not a carbine make. Short, relatively light, and ease of use in the saddle, do.
