Captain Solomon Eugene Cunningham. Born in 1823, Solomon was the son of Enoch Cunningham and Catherine Wolf of Buncombe County, North Carolina. He married Sarah S. Fletcher in 1844. Supporting his state and community, he answered the call to serve the Confederate States of America and enlisted in Company H, Cane Creek Rifles, 25th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. He was promoted to Captain on April 30, 1862. He was wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia on July 1, 1862. He was mortally wounded on December. 13, 1862 at Fredericksburg, Virginia. Captain Cunningham was transported to Seabrook Military Hospital in Richmond where he died from his wounds. He was the father of eight children.

The 25th was primarily a mountaineers of western NC regiment and we have a Cane Creek here in Jackson County - although western NC has no shortage of Cane Creeks.

Cherokee County is where both my paternal and maternal roots are. There and neighboring Monroe County TN and Union County GA.
