Capt. Farley of JEB Stuarts staff

Captain William Downs Farley, he was Stuart's Chief of Scouts. He was 28 when he was killed at Brandy Station on June 9, 1863. Farley was sitting on his horse next to Colonel Matthew Calbraith Butler of the 2nd S.C. Cavalry, a shell shot from a Federal gun took off Butler's foot and severed Farley's leg. Men rushed to Butler's aid, but he urged them to look to Farley. They put him on a blanket on the ground, and he requested they bring him his severed leg, and he was held it to his chest. He was taken to the rear where he died several hours later. See also the link below.
