    I didn't really mean that in a derogatory way. I guess I meant it more like confirmation bias. Americans had seen minstrel shows; now they saw the real thing and wrote what seemed familiar. You're right. The south was an exotic place to many boys who had never been away from home, never seen a sweet potato or palm tree, etc. Like if you or I visited Dagobah.
